Project 365, #132: Mum.

For Mother’s Day, we took a walk by the ocean.

I inherited many things from my mother and her side of the family, and one of them is a deep and abiding love of the sea. It is a powerful thing, the ocean, and it calls to us. It’s in our blood and our bones to have a need to spend time near it, at the very least. Listening to the rhythm of the crash and boom and slap, smelling the spray and healing negative ions, seeing the white horses of the wave’s crest, feeling its pull, longing to be in those deep cool waters.

I think we are descendants of selkies, and certainly we are of the people of ManannĂ¡n mac Lir. That is a part of my heritage that I take much quiet pride and strength in, and hope one day to honor in some fashion. And part of us will always belong to that watery ancestral home whose soul still touches our hearts with peace and belonging.
